Okay, now that I've started inviting people to the blog, when you get here, please introduce yourselves! Undoubtedly most of you will know each other from classes, but who knows, we may get someone new from time to time.
Hi All! Some of you may know me from daycare, bright and early! Others may have seen me at classes with my two Border Collies, Cote and Phoenix.
I remember asking Laurie one day what life would be like had we never met and I know in my mind it would be completely different and definately not as fulfilling. Cote and I have been through a lot together, especially getting him past his issues with personal space and other dogs. I can't imagine sharing my life with him any other way. He lights up in Rally Obedience in a way he never did before our training with Laurie. And now I've had the opportunity to start from the very beginning with Phoenix.
I hope to see old and new people on here for some interesting discussions :)
Yay, hi Jackie and welcome!! Yes, Cote is indeed one of the best success stories we have at Pup 'N Iron. I, too, look forward to getting some great discussions going.
Hi... what a great idea, Laurie! This is going to be fun :)
I live with five Australian Shepherds - Daisy, Rusty, Violet, Petunia and Skipper. All are special in their own way.
I enjoy going to rally trials with Rusty and Skipper, and I enjoy participating in agility trials with Skipper and Petunia... the BEST part about these activities, though, is the time spent TRAINING!
It has been so much fun training with such a great group of people. I appreciate the friendships that have evolved over the past year... and it's all because we share common interest in the welfare of our doggie companions! How cool is that!
Hello Everyone. I'll be teaching the Intro to Flyball class. I know several of you since my dogs, Miss Winston and Raven attend the Rally trials and run-thrus.
I'll be getting my new puppy next week! Can't wait to start bringing him to puppy classes.
Phoenix and I are really looking forward to starting flyball with you on Saturday, even if it means we still have to get up early :) Can't wait to see the new pup!
Welcome you guys! I do hope to get some good discussions going. The first of which will be the first of which will be a discussion of the Golden Globe Award fashions ...... just kidding! :) Actually I've been thinking a lot about the dynamics in a multi-dog home - which most of us have. So I'll likely post some of my musings about life with A LOT of different Fidos.
Hello everyone!! For those of you who don't know me. I am owned by 3, yes that's 3.........Shih-Tzu!! Adrianne who is 2 1/2, her sister Ali (from a different litter) who is 1 1/2, and my newest addition, Abby (no relation) who is 4 1/2 months old. I also have a Golden Lab mix who is 7 yrs old. I spend alot of my time at Pup 'N Iron (when I am not at work)where we love to have fun and learn new and intestesting things all the time. I have known Laurie since Adrianne was about 8 weeks old. We started our training there at Petsmart back in 2004..........And here we are. Look at us now! Who would of thought I would be so highly interested/motivated in training and competing with this beautiful breed! But they love it so much! And we have formed that wonderful bond together. We love Rally, and Agility. We also love to go visit at Mary Washington Hospital and once a month we volunteer in the READ program at Porter Library.... if and when possible that is. LOL! Well until next time......Happy training!!
Ok, since my test worked, here it goes. I'm Debbie and I work and train at Pup N Iron, which I would like to thank Laurie for allowing me to do so. I have 4 dogs all different breeds. Piper, 7yr old Beauceron, by far my best accomplishment and my constant and best friend. Herbie, Papillon 20 mos. a promising work in progress, and best lap warmer. Storm my senior King Shepherd, whom I brought home as a fuzzy tiny puppy destined for the breed ring, didn't happen, though is the best house dog and converation piece ever. Lastly is a Cav, whom is owned by my daughter Corrinn, who has been scarce since turning 13, though you may catch a fleeting glimpse of her now and then at classes or events. And oh I almost forgot, my human best friend who puts up w/my other family, my hubby Roy as well as my son, and 2 chincillas and 1 bird. I have loved animals my whole life, and dogs just fit better in my life style. I enjoy competing in Rally and Obedience.
Hi to everyone! Some of you may have seen Diesel and I around during obedience or rally. I feel so fortunate to have a fabulous training facility close to home. One of Diesel's contract ownership requirements is that he obtain a CD title by the age of 29 months. I, who have never stepped FOOT in a dog show before Diesel, will not be able to accomplish this overwhelming feat without Laurie's ever patient help 8-) It is so nice to have a community of people who are devoted to their dogs, who don't look askance at spoiling them a little and who would NEVER utter the phrase "it's only a dog." We'll see you around.
I'm Janet, I've met most of you with my buddy Foster (black tri aussie who don't know). Foster has two legs toward his CDX, his RN, TDi and I've just mailed my first agility entry! I also have a 12year old Lab mix that I showed in UKC and she has a UCD but had no interest in doing the broad jump for Open and Rally was not around. SO she is just a great house dog. We are also waiting for our new Aussie puppy to arrive Feb 7th from Texas, you'll see him in puppy class!
Many of you don't know that I have a great home support group headed up by my husband, Chuck and my four children. Yes four, ages 8 1/2, 7, almost 3 and 16 months (2 boys, 2 girls).
Chuck is in the Air Force and we moved here this past summer We should be here till summer '09.
My dogs are my therapy for living with the humans. My dogs always love me. I am sooo glad I found Pup n Iron and that it is very close to my house. I love going there with Foster and training and chatting with everyone.
As for the AKC breed topic...
We fell victim 16 years ago with the Lab bug. Heard they were a great dog and they were readily available in the paper. We were uneducated in picking a dog and the puppy we chose was out of a neighbors backyard. I think we were the typical dog buyer that you still find today. Our lab ended up being from a strong hunting line and started causing trouble at about 6 months. Long story short, I took her to obedience classes (probably a little late) and learned a lot of what we did wrong already. She ended up with some very dangerous behaviors toward other animals in the house and was placed with another family. I'm sure a lot of it was poor breeding and a lack of early training. After the 1st Lab we rescued a second one that I could swap "my dog is worse than your dog" stories all day! We did manage to over come most of her problems and she moved with us 9 times. I think we were more successful with the second dog because we were armed with a lot more information and were able to help her over come her troubles. Our labx is a rescue off the street and I believe early training was the key to her being such a great dog.
I think the BIGGEST problem is education. Too many people get a puppy because it is a popular breed and then they want to try and get their money back by breeding it and get on the "gravy train". I cringe when someone says they are going to breed their dog but haven't taken the time to show it or have the necessary genetic testing done. I respect the breeder who takes the time to place puppies by personality and famliy life style rather than "what color do you want?"
In conclusion, I am not against rescuing a dog in need but strongly discourage buying a puppy out of the paper instead of thru a respected breeder with references.
Hi folks, looks like I'm the last to enter here so far. As you know I'm the Cavalier person and I have 4, most of you have seen at least three of them. I also have an elderly girl, Miranda, who usually adorns the couch at home. I do rally (my newest fun thing), agility, freestyle, some obedience and have tried some other odds and ends. Harley will probably soon be retiring, but as long as she is enjoying agility, we will keep it up.
I got into having Cavaliers back in the 90's with a very sweet, very soft little boy and took my first obedience classes back when the pop and jerk methods were still fashionable. It was so refreshing when I finally discovered more positive trainers and training. I'm not saying that I'm perfect yet, I will admit I find myself grumping at little Benny way too much some nights but luckily he puts up with me and keeps wagging his tail.
I am enjoying pni more than any other training place I've had. You guys are all great, and fun, and passionate about dogs and I really enjoy being around you all.
Hi!! Most of you don't know me (though judging by breed and names, I think I know Brandy...I worked at Furry Farm)...I am a new face at pup n iron, though I will be spending a lot of time there VERY soon. I am a student of Laurie's in her trainer's apprenticeship and I will be an employee as well starting next week. I have 2 dogs, a Pit bull mix and a Beagle. I am a full time student at UMW, and live at home w/ my parents...the Beagle is theirs. We also have 5 cats (the newest and youngest of whom have made me realize just how much of a dog person I really am), and 3 ferrets.
I came by my pit mix by chance. I fostered her for about 6 months, but I fell in love and 3 years later, she's still here :) She is great with people of all sizes/ages, and with dogs. She's pretty good with the cats and ferrets, she just doesn't seem to understand why they don't want to wrestle...though she is gentle w/ them. She is a great dog, and it just kills me when people are frightened of her. It is because of this that I am quite the pit bull advocate at times. I hate that they get such a bad name, and I hate even more the people that have helped them get the name...the news reporters, and more importantly, those that get a pit bull just because they're "big, mean and scary fighting machines". Anyone who spends any time with a real pit bull, one bought/adopted for all the right reasons, will find that pit bulls never meet a stranger, greeting them as they would a family member they hadn't seen in years. They are great with kids, especially because they have such a high tolerance for pain, so the usual tail, hair, or ear pull that would cause some dogs to bite, are barely felt by the pit bull. Don't get me worng, I am by no means saying that they are a breed meant for everyone, but they don't deserve the reputaion they have. They too are a breed that suffers greatly from their populatrity.
Btw... I've never met a Pit that I haven't liked - They're an awesome breed... the ones I've met have had great temperaments. It's horrible they've received such a bad rap from the press, and as a result of the bad press, from the general public...
Welcome, I own Piper. Let me ask you a question. What would happen if you didn't fulfill your contract agreement? I myself have never signed a contact w/a breeder for anything, IMO I feel I have the dog, and I make all final decisions. If it's a co-own than do they pay half of everything? Should they? Is a co-own 50/50 or just a name? What if you or the dog is not ready? What are they going to do? take you to court? To what result? Just courious. Anybody else out there have a co-own, share you experience please.
Debbie, To answer your questions, I do co-own Diesel. The arrangement is on paper only, and is an accomodation so that if the need ever arises where Glenn (my breeder) ever needs to take Diesel into the show ring (which she did last May when Diesel showed in breed at the Rottweiler Nationals) she can. Glenn is an AKC judge which disqualifies her from handling any dog that she does not own. She does not share any of his expenses; but she is willing to board him any time and give training lessons at no cost. As for the ownership contract, he is required to go to a specified amount of class with a certified trainer, have the CGC (which he already has) and the CD (the rest of his litter is required to have it by the end of August, but because I got him at 8 months of age I have until the end of January, 2008). Also, under the contract, I am only required to put one leg of the CD on myself. If he were showing breed, I could have the professional handler do the other two legs. I have the option of keeping him intact and studding him. If I choose to do that, he is required to have his hips, elbows, heart and eyes certifed. Any bitch that he is bred to is required to have the same certifications, and all offspring from his loins must be sold under contract. The terms of the contract do not have to match HIS contract, just under contract. The contract is very specific, so I knew what I was getting into when I signed it. Glenn was very upfront and made sure that I fully understood what was required before she would let me take Diesel home. There are a few other things having to do with notifications for non-emergency surgery, requests for second opinions and things of that nature. Technically, if I don't fulfill my contractual agreement, Glenn can repossess Diesel. She has told me stories of other dogs that did not achieve their titles within the specified time frame. These dogs are still with their owners. As long as she knows that the owner is working with the dog, she will not take drastic measures. She has, however, had the take people to court to get dogs back from people who were mistreating or not properly training. In one case, the owner died before the dog got the CD. The dog ended up with a boyfriend who did no training whatsoever. Now in the contract, Glenn gets first rights on the dog in case of death. In my case, my husband is not on the contract. So, if something happens to me before Diesel gets his CD, Tucker will have to deal with Glenn about whether or not he can keep Diesel. We knew that at the beginning, and that was how Tucker wanted it. I really don't see it being a problem, though, because Glenn loves Tucker! I hope that answers everyone's questions. If you want more details or want to see the actual contract, let me know. I don't mind sharing :) Christie
Samantha, Hi and welcome! If you worked at Furry Farm, you may have encountered Diesel. He LOVES to come and play when I am out of town. We'll see you around Christie
Hi, Karen here. I am owned by 4 Scottish Terriers and cannot even imagaine my life without a dog sharing the journey with me.
I've always been over the top when it comes to canines. My family say I love dogs more then I do people...well perhaps that is true.
Unconditional love. That is a mighty big responsibility and I try to always be deserving of that love.
I've learned a lot over the last several years and that knowledge has helped to enrich my life as a dog Mom. The Scots and I have had a terrier-iffic time in applying our new found knowledge and we hope to keep growing as a team.
I have Laurie to thank for this. She has provided the tools, place, lessons and incentive to work and play with my dogs.
I too have a contract with my new puppy. Some of the contract states... that he must be seen by a vet with in two days of arriving to unsure he is as healthy as they say he is, that he is being acquired as a family pet (not for breeding), he must be neutered by 12 months of age and mail proof to the breeder. If we do not send proof of neutering we will not receive registration papers for AKC or ASCA. IF he were to breed there is a $1000 fine and all guarantees are null and void. I think that when I do get his papers they will be ILP papers for AKC and something similar for ASCA. Foster's are like that.
AND if our dog exhibits hip dysplasia, inherited epilepsy, or congenital eye defect before 36 months they will try to replace the dog with a healthier dog from a future litter.
IF we decide to rehome him they have right of first refusal or help in interviewing the prospective new owner.
If they feel he is abused they can repossess him and inflict another $1000 for any breach of contract.
He has also been to an animal opthamoligist (sp) just a few days ago before they send the puppies to their home.
I think some contracts are to scare away the buyer that seems like they talk a good talk but are put off by signing a three page long contract. "maybe it's more than I can really handle right now, I don't need these people in my business..."
Janet - sounds to me your dogs have "limited registrations," not ILPs (Indefinite Listing Privilege).
I'm assuming both Fosters and the pup have parents that are registered with both AKC and ASCA, and I assume the kennel has registered these litters... The registration is part of what the purchaser is paying for...
A limited registration simply means that in the future, the dog or bitch cannot have puppies that can be registered with AKC/ASCA. HOwever, the heritage of the dog/bitch is documented. Of course, if left intact and bred, the pup registered with a limited registration can certainly produce puppies - however, the pups just can't be registered with these two registries. A dog with a limited registration can compete in all the performance events offered by the registries. It's offspring, however, would not be recognized by these registries.
Dogs with ILPs are dogs that are obviously a certain breed, but due to a number of different reasons, do not have registrations - these are the dogs that are ILP registered - ILP'd dogs are allowed to participate in AKC/ASCA performance events but again, their offspring are not registerable with AKC/ASCA.
That's what I ment... LP's, I had taken my Ambien before blogging because it usually takes a while to kick it :)
So, yes they could physically breed if left in-tack (which Foster is not and nor will the puppy) but who wants to buy a purebred w/o papers? It's a way for the breeder to deter the puppy pet owner from reconsidering breeding after they get it home. You can't control the people that buy the puppies once they get them home but I think a responsible breeder will have this LP in place to help.
Then again what's to keep someone from getting an ILP for a puppy born from an LP? Just say you don't know the breeding? Not sure.
I co-own my Pharoah too. I wanted to have the breeders name on him because she is recognized in the breed. Showing is political and sure, I wanted any edge I could get. Plus, since she is his co-owner, when she handles him I will not have to pay her. ;-)
Ok. So I'm a few weeks late but oh well:) I'm Jessi. I haven't been around pni in a few months but will be back this week. Some of you may know my beagle, Bandit and I from the comp obed class. And others of you may know my beagle, Bravo and I from an agility class or two.
Anyway. My dogs... Bandit is a male beagle who will be 10 in May. He was my first dog and I have learned SO much over the last 8 years:) Bandit and I are working on getting his CD (I've never shown a dog in obedience before). Bandit has also done alot of work on commercials and such. Shadow is a male ... shepherd/border collie mix? I'm not sure but honestly don't care:) He just turned 8 (my first puppy is 8 already!). Shadow LOVES agility (but has yet to compete). Hopefully, his mom's schedule will allow him to enroll in a few classes. Buzz is a male beagle who will be 6 in June. He is my flyball dog. He is a total nut for flyball! He's had some agility training and really loves anything that allows him to run and jump:) And last is Bravo. The youngest male beagle who will be 5 at the end of April. He is a drama queen but absolutely LOVES agility, especially those contacts (but like his "brother" Shadow has yet to compete)! I'd like to get a CD on him eventually too. He has just started his acting career but has been watching Bandit closely for a while to learn:) Those are "the boys". They all were either rescued from a shelter or rescue group with the exception of Bravo who was found by a friend of mine on the side of the road when he was 7.5 weeks old.
As for me, I'm just their mom:) It's my most important job. Oh and yes, I am the crazy one that drives all the way from Springfield to attend classes at pni. I would love to attend more classes with them but I am a dog trainer up in my neck of the woods so I don't have many free weeknight evenings:)
I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone in the future:)
Oh! I forgot to mention that I am also a volunteer with 3 different rescue groups:) Who ever heard of spare time? Two of them are all breed rescues and the newest one I've started with is a pit bull rescue.
Hi, I know that no one will read this blog now but I thought I would introduce myself anyway. I'm Jill and I have 3 dogs. One mutt and 2 papillions. I think I have met most of you through pni. I'm Rascal's mom and as you may know Rascal, Hope and I have a lot to learn. Oscar is our old mutt and he just isn't into training like the rest of us. He is a great hiking companion though and he keeps my husband moving. I'm lookig forward to participating on this blog and learning lots from you guys. LOL Jill

Christine,
Welcome, I own Piper.
Debbie,
To answer your questions, I do co-own Diesel.
I don't mind sharing :)
Christie
Samantha,
Hi and welcome!
If you worked at Furry Farm, you may have encountered Diesel. He LOVES to come and play when I am out of town. We'll see you around
Christie
Christine,
Thank you for answering.
Good luck and if you need any help just ask.
Debbie,
I too have a contract with my new puppy.
Similar, but different.
Not sure.
Christie,
I love Deisel. He's a gorgeous boy, and very sweet!
Welcome Jessi! It will be nice to see you and your dogs again!
LOL Jill
