We've had such controversial and intense topics so far on the blog, I thought I'd throw out just a fun topic for us to discuss. I'm a huge movie buff and usually try to see most dog related movies, either in the theater or at least on dvd when they're released. How about everyone listing their top five dog related movies and why they love those movies so much.
I'll start.
1. Lady and the Tramp - I must've been about 6 or 7 years old when I first saw this beautiful movie. In fact, I think this is one of the first movies I can remember seeing. My mommy took me to see it and I was mesmerized. I loved it so much and to this day I get tears in my eyes thinking about it.
2. 101 Dalmatians - Duh, huh? Yes, the Disney company single handedly ruined the Dalmatian breed, but I'm sorry, I have nothing but love when memories of seeing this movie come to mind. God I hated Cruella DeVille. She is still one of my most hated movie villains of all time.
3. My Dog Skip - It was probably the time of my life that I saw this movie, but I remember leaving the theater crying almost uncontrollably after seeing this movie. My Irish Terrier bitch Fiona had just turned 16 years old and I was going through a difficult time in my life at the time and just seeing the elderly Skip sent me right over the edge. I will never forget it.
4. Eight Below - This one caught me by surprise. I wasn't expecting much but I really found this movie to be very well done, so much better than the other Husky movies like Snow Dogs (barf). I also loved the fact that it was based on a true story. That is always a plus.
5. Lassie - Okay, there are probably a dozen or more movies with Lassie as the heroine (even though oftentimes the dog playing Lassie was a femaile impersonator!!), but I have to give it up for the most popular dog movie star of all time. Lassie is the quintessential symbol of the most awesome dog ever. I could watch a Lassie movie or episode of the 50's television show anytime.
Let's hear yours .................

1. Balto - The ultimate underdog movie. I remember I wanted to see this in the theaters but Mom and I never found the time to see it so she bought it on VHS when it came out. To this day it sits there with my DVDs, a well watched video.
2. The Adventures of Milo and Otis - I may not be a cat person, but this movie was too adorable. The friendship between the two was great.
3. Babe - As Laurie said "Duh." This was my first true introduction to the Border Collie. Atleast I wasn't one of those people who ran out and got one :)
4. Homeward Bound - I can still hear Shadow saying , "This is your last chance, Chance." The reunion of pets and family still brings a tear to my eye.
5. Where the Red Fern Grows - It was a toss up between this and Eight Below. Both made me cry like a two-year old, however, having read the book and seen the movie made Where the Red Fern Grows my #5 pick.
Boy this is hard, I keep thinking of non dog movies.
#1. Homeward Bound, it had all the things in a movie to make it great. I remember watching it before my kids, cuz I knew I would cry like a baby and I did and still do, and I didn't want them to see me cry. Now I don't care.
#2. 101 Dalmations, the real and animated. It was just fun, for the real one my favorite part was in the fur factory, and the parrot.
#3 Beethoven 1. Cute St. Bernards and funny. My favorite part when they rescued all the caged dogs.
#4. Because of Winn-Dixie, a magical dog, what could be better?
#5. Lady and the Tramp, probably one of the first movies I remember seeing. Loved Lady.
Wow, you guys have mentioned movies I haven't seen. I will be sure to look them up and watch!
I do really like the "live" version of 101 Dalmatians. I like to see the real animals in the movies and try to figure out how they trained them to do it.
Debbie, that's Janet's way of calling us old, I guess. Boy is she subtle! :)
Jackie isn't old.
;)
I would have to say, (and Sam would agree), Turner and Hooch- I love that movie! You laugh, you cry...it's great!
Second best, and I am not sure of the title, is the movie with Patrick Swazy that comes on Lifetime where the dog grants wishes and he is some stranger that the family hits in their car...for some reason I am always hooked on that movie.
Haha! Thanks Janet :D
Yes, Jackie is a baby compared to us. But you are catching up. You know children (human) age you at least 4-5 years each. And you have what? Like 10? :)
Then I must be the OLDEST, goody for me!
I feel old...does that count?
You're as young as you feel!
Kim, the name of that Patrick Swayze movie was "Three Wishes," I think and the dog in it was adorable!!
Oh yes, we were talking about dog movies ;)
I love them all. Mostly the ones where they use real animals, not the animated. And the reason that I haven't seen some of these is because I never have time to sit and watch a movie. I'm Mom, I have to multi task WAY too much.
But you guys have given me titles to try and check out during my next free moment... I think that will be in 2025 when the 'baby' graduates high school.
:)
I love dog movies. Let's have a movie night at PNI!!
Will there be over size couches and bean bags to sit on? Or will we have to bring our own dog bed? The whole family could come! ;)
Not unless you bring them! :) We're having it on New Year's Eve and it's double BYOB (bring your own beverage and bring your own BED!!)
My fav is because of Winn Dixie, I thought it would be too schlocky, but it turned out to be quite good. I like all those movies you mentioned, but I really have a hard time watching the tearjerkers, and if the dog dies--well, that's horrible, I really hate it. Beethoven #1 was good. I just hate where the dogs have to endure some hardship or get hurt or anything negative.
I've not seen Winn Dixie. I guess I should get it on netflix. Maybe we should add that to our movie night list!! :)
#1a: Homeward Bound-I loved this movie. The funny thing is, I saw Chance and thought he was the cutest dog I'd ever seen, but I never knew what kind he was. Who knew the bullies would end up my breed of choice to own (he's an American Bulldog, but close enough in looks)
#1b: Lady and the Tramp- I couldn't choose between these two. This is my favorite Disney movie of all times.I consider these #1's both duh's for me, since they have a bully, and a cocker (poor Penny, I can't recall seeing any great beagle movies, though Shiloh wasn't bad)
#2: Turner and Hooch
#3: Beethoven's 2nd- The first one was good, but the puppies in the second one made the movie for me. They were just so cute!!
#4: Look Who's Talking Now- This is the forst thing that came to mind when I saw MoMo. This movie made me want a standard poodle, and all I can think of when MoMO comes in newly groomed with the bows in her hair and her feet shaved, she reminds me of Daphne!
#5: Fluke
Hum... my favorite dog movies;
1. Where the Fern Grows I grew up in the mountains so I can relate. I remember when I was little, my mutt running off with the ugliest hound dog I had ever seen. He was gone for 2 weeks before we were able to recover him.
2. Lady and the Tramp. I think Oscar looks abit like the Tramp.
3. Babe however I was really more into the pig than the dogs in this movie. So does ths count as a dog movie for me? ummmm
Oh I love the idea of a dog movie night at PNI. I also enjoyed Turner and Hooch.
LOL Samantha! MoMo is stuck up (with dogs) like Daphne too. But as you know she is anything but prissy. She is probably outside right now rolling in the mud as I type!
There are lots of movies with dogs in them, but the dog isn't necessarily the focus that I love. "Sounder" is one. I really, really love that movie. And then there's Rocky, I mean, come on, who doesn't love Butkus - who was Sly Stallone's real dog, by the way. And when I saw Flashdance I fell in love with Jennifer Beals' character's dog Grunt, a HUGE pit bull, and back in 1983 I didn't know what kind of dog he was but I LOVED him!!
Jill, we're definitely going to do movie nights. The first one will be New Year's Eve, but I'm going to try to do one once a month beginning in January.
Yes,I too love all the Rocky movies. That is where I got the names of my first 3 dogs (Rambo, Rocky, and Adrianne). LOL! But I didn't know that Butkus was Sly's dog in real life. How cool! I have been watching you all post movies and most of them I have seen and like so I didn't want to post the same. I have been waiting to post one that no one else has and darn if memories didn't come back this evening as I watched the 1974 version of Benji! I love that movie when I was a kid. And still do. Guess I am showing my age huh! Anyway, I love the part when Benji finds his girl friend and they name her Tiffany! They were too cute together!!
Right. There are a lot of movies that don't have the dogs as a focus but drew my attention anyway. Harry Potter has Fang, a Neopolitan Mastiff, and that was actually the first I'd seen besides a breed book. Something about all those wrinkles...
Ok, speaking of movies, that is all I can watch right now because Cox didn't show up all day and when they did, the box doesn't work! The move, by the way was horrible...if anyone wants to feel sorry for me and Sam now. Poor Sam, new environment, new smells, no friends to see...Am I talking about Sam or me? Poor pittiful me...I mean Sam.... :0(
Anyway, Thanks again for everything,,,,but ya'll forgot Sam's big prize on the Howl o ween page! Forgotten already...LOL
Wish I had Turner and Hooch to watch tonight!
Wish I had a movie to watch right now...Cox cable never showed up!
The move didn't go so well...Poor Sam...new environment, new smells, no friends to go see- oh was I talking about Sam or me? Poor pitiful Sam...
Oh, ya'll forgot about Sam's great prize on the Howl -o-ween page----forgotten already-LOL!
Wish I had Turner and Hooch to watch right now...
Oh my gosh Kim. So sorry your move has been so horrible. We really miss Sam. :( We love looking at the photos you left for us. He sure did look like a Yorkie once! :) He is one of a kind. An original!!
Boy, do I feel left out of this string of the conversations. It sure was fun to read. And better late than never. But I certainly agree with Laurie about the "Age" thing it's all in how you feel. I have a good idea for a movie night, we could do it for the New Years lock in. No, never mind we would fall asleep, well I know I would, after 11pm I am toast. And no it's not the age things, so stop thinking it....I have been that way since I was in high school. Now back to the favorite dog movies, the dog in "Because of Winn Dixie" is a Berger Picard, and the dog in "3 Wishes" and "The Lake House" is a Portugese Pondengo. Which 1 of them I hope to own one day.
You have enough dogs, don't you? ;)
Wow, I didn't know those dogs in Lake House and Three Wishes were purebred. Seriously? They sure look like the Portuguese Podengo, but I've seen terrier mixes that could pass for Podengos too! Did you see the pequeno ones? Too cute.
Every time I go to Walmart, I look through the movies and search for any movies with dogs as the main characters. While I love the classics that Laurie mentioned, here are a few more that I found interesting. Of course at some point, they're all tear jerkers. What I like most about all these movies is the great bond between handler and dog - and most of the handlers are kids! And the typically portray just how smart the dogs are!
1) Good Boy - Hubble, the border terrier, does some awesome tricks in this movie.
2) Biscuit Eater - 1972 remake of the 1940 version where 2 kids ignore their racial differences and train a feral bird dog.
3) Old Yeller - what a classic!!
4) Kelly - Seems to be a british version of Lassie, but with a GSD.
5) Rin Tin Tin - not sure if these were movies, but certainly a great tv show. (Before my time, but I got to watch re-runs :-))
LOL
I have a feeling Laurie and I are about the same age - we saw Lady and the Tramp about the same time. That is one of the few movies I went to when I was growing up. I finally found a closed caption tape of the movie and was able to REALLY enjoy it!
I seldom go to theaters because the movies are rarely captioned :-( I wait to rent the tape or watch them on TV.
